In the dental fortnight going on at the civil hospital, 90% of the patients are coming with gum disorders while a number of men and women aged between 40 and 50 are coming with a demand for complete denture installation.

Doctors say people, especially women, are suffering early falling of teeth these days due to various factors. “Due to hormonal changes during pregnacy, fluid retention happens in gums, and the pregnant women normally don’t take care of oral health during pregnancy. This results in slow tooth decay which is further not taken care of post-pregnancy. They come running to clinics only when their teeth start falling,” says Dr Pardeep Sharma, district dental health officer, oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

Dr Sharma says “a number of times women in the age group of 25-30 years as well come with many teeth already fallen and they seek advice on how to save the rest”. Lack of oral hygeine is the main reason for loss of teeth among young men and women, he adds.

Dr Vivek Saggar, a reputed surgeon of the city, says, “The number of patients asking for complete dentures below the age of 50 has increased. Women need to get guidance from their gynaecologists to get scaling of teeth done during second trimester at least.”

Dr Sharma adds, “These days maximum pregnancies are planned. So before planning a pregnancy, women must get scaling of their teeth done and even gynaecologists should also guide pregnant women about oral health as well. This is the part which the pregnant women neglect a lot.”Doctors recommend dental check-up once in six months to avoid early falling of teeth and also stress adopting correct brushing techniques.
